The Shanghai Composite Index opened at 2,965.61 points, down 4.78 points, or 0.16 percent.

The Shenzhen Component Index opened at 8,831.68 points, down 38.68 points, or 0.44 percent.

The Hang Seng Index opened at 18,020.17 points, up 187.84 points, or 1.05 percent.

The S&P/ASX 200 index opened at 7,959.40 points, up 69.80 points, or 0.88 percent.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average opened at 41,668.86 points, down 555.16 points, or 1.31 percent.

The Straits Times Index opened at 3,486.40 points, up 11.34 points, or 0.33 percent.

The Korea Composite Stock Price Index opened at 2,867.75 points, down 20.96 points, or 0.73 percent.

IN THE UNITED STATES

The S&P 500 Index closed at 5,584.54 points, down 49.37 points, or 0.88 percent.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 39,753.75 points, up 32.39 points, or 0.08 percent.
